Practical Tips: What to Know Before You Travel
Preparing for a trip to Mexico involves anticipating a few practical aspects to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Transport, phone, money... This guide provides you with all the essentials for a stress-free stay.

🛂 VISA
For stays of less than 180 days, European, American, and many other nationals do not need a visa to enter Mexico. Upon arrival, you will receive a migration form (FMM), which you must keep for the duration of your stay. This document may be requested when you leave the country.
💊 HEALTH
Be cautious with tap water (not drinkable).
Avoid unwashed or poorly preserved raw vegetables in markets.
Consider purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind.
💸 MONEY
- Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). Prefer withdrawing cash for small expenses, especially in rural areas.
- ATMs & Withdrawals: Use recognised banks like BBVA, Santander, ScotiaBank, or HSBC to avoid excessive fees. Always decline the ATM's exchange rate; your bank's rate is likely better.
- Card Payments: Visa and Mastercard are accepted in most places, but always have cash on hand.
- Tipping: Around 10-15% in restaurants and a few pesos for services (porters, parking, etc.).
📱 PHONE, SIM CARD, AND INTERNET
For easy internet access, buy a local SIM card (Telcel, AT&T, Movistar).
Available at OXXO (convenience stores) or specialised shops with various plans (unlimited data, social networks included).
Avoid buying SIM cards online; there are OXXO stores or phone operators at airports, and the network will be better.
🚗 CAR RENTAL
Essential if you want to explore cenotes and less accessible sites freely.
🚌 TRAVELLING BY BUS
Main Companies: ADO, Estrella de Oro, Estrella Blanca, Estrella Roja, Omnibus, Primera Plus
Comfort: Air conditioning, reclining seats, and films on long-distance trips.
🚆 TRAVELLING BY TRAIN
The Tren Maya crosses the Riviera Maya and Yucatán, offering a comfortable way to explore the region. However, tickets for foreigners are generally more expensive than for locals. The project is still under development, and some routes are not yet open, so check available itineraries before you go.
🚕 TRAVELLING BY TAXI
Uber (Mexico City, Cancún), DiDi (cheaper in Mexico City).
Be cautious in Cancún, as the taxi mafia dislikes Uber!
🚇 PUBLIC TRANSPORT
- Mexico City: Fast and cheap metro (avoid rush hours), Uber recommended for more comfort.
- Cancún and Tulum: Collectivos (shared minibuses) for easy and affordable travel. Otherwise, taxis or Uber/DiDi.
- Holbox: No cars; everything is done on foot, by bike, or golf cart!
